On Thursday, Head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Mnifi held a meeting in Tobruk with the Head of the UN Support Mission to Libya (UNSMIL), Jan Kubis.

During the talks, Al-Mnifi and Kubis discussed the UN’s efforts to support the political track, the steps needed to hold elections on 24 December 2021, the annual budget, as well as areas of collaboration between the UN and the new interim authority in support of the Libyan people.

They also stressed the need to achieve real national reconciliation, implement the recently adopted UN Security Council Resolutions 2570 (2021) and 2571 (2021), implement the October ceasefire agreement, and deploy the UN ceasefire monitors.

Kubis welcomed the establishment of the High National Reconciliation Commission, urged the appointment and inclusion of women, including in leadership positions, and offered UN support for achieving an inclusive, rights-based national reconciliation and transitional justice process.

He also stressed that holding the general elections as scheduled was critical for Libya’s transition towards unity, democracy, stability and prosperity. He urged the relevant Libyan institutions and parties, including the Parliament, to live up to the aspiration of the people and swiftly finalize the necessary constitutional and legal frameworks.
