Libya Elects Head of General Libyan Women’s Union

In a proactive initiative to embody the national entitlement, the General Libyan Women’s Union was elected.

According to a statement by the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), the elections were held on 7-8 July, at the HNEC Media Center. The women laid down the building blocks for the direct democracy project through which the General Libyan Women’s Union was established.

The President and her two deputies were elected in the presence of 86 female voters. 73 of them voted out of three available lists of Al-Rayyad, Al-Saraya, and Al-Manara. The Al-Saraya list was victorious

Al-Saraya list included:

  1. Fathia Ahmed Al-Bakhbakhi, Head of the General Women’s Union.

2_ Nana Youssef Issa, First Deputy Head of the General Women’s Union.

3_ Samar Najmi Abdel-Malik, Second Deputy Head of the General Women’s Union.

The elections were supervised by HNEC, and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).

The ceremony was attended by HNEC’s Head, Emad Al-Din Al-Sayeh, HNEC member, Rabab Halab, representatives of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the High Council of State (HCS), the Women’s Support Unit in the Presidential Council, and a number of female activists from across Libya.
