IOM Provides Support to Libyan Border Crossings

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya provided medical equipment and supplies to Libya’s National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) for the establishment of health screening centers at Libya’s border crossings with Tunisia and Egypt. This was made possible with the support of the European Union Fund and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland.

This comes as part of a series of precautionary measures taken by the Government of National Accord (GNA) and the eastern-based Interim Government to limit the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

Mukhtar Al-Mansouri, Director of the International Health Oversight Office at Ras Ajdir, stated that they lacked medical equipment and quarantine rooms, with staff struggling to contain the large number of Libyans crowding the border crossing.

Despite the closure of the border crossing for travel, it remains open for commercial traffic. Al-Mansouri said he had hoped that neighboring countries would seal their borders entirely to ensure the containment of COVID-19.
