On Monday, the Libyan Parliament’s Roadmap Committee stated that holding elections would require 10 months to one year of preparations. This includes, amending the constitution, and adopting electronic voter records to prevent fraud.

The Chairman of the committee, Nasr El-Din Mhenni briefed the Parliament, and claimed that the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) should receive technical, security, and legislative support to complete the electoral process.

He also clarified that the Civil Status Authority submitted a project to match national ID’s to detect forgery. The project will be completed within 240 days, he confirmed.

MP, Abdel-Salam Nassiya said that a committee consisting of 24 members of Parliament, the High Council of State (HCS), the Constitution Commission, and experts was formed to amend the draft constitution within 45 days. This will then be put to a referendum.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh stated that MP’s appointed to Libyan Embassies abroad, public companies, or those who have boycotted Parliamentary sessions would have their membership revoked.

Saleh added that a list of names will be prepared, and presented on Tuesday, according to his speech during Monday’s session.

The Speaker also announced that candidates for the position of Prime Minister will submit their candidacies on Monday. A new PM to replace Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba will be selected on 8 February.

Last week, the Spokesman for the Libyan Parliament, Abdullah Blaiheg stated that MP’s have set 12 conditions to accept the candidacy for the next Prime Minister.

Blaiheg explained that the Parliament’s Presidency approved the conditions during today’s session, which was attended by 120 MP’s.
