Libya-Sweden Discuss Strengthening Cooperation

On Monday, Libyan Ambassador to Sweden, Khattab Hussein held a meeting at the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department, Magnus Redberg.

The meeting was also attended by Stefan Soderbergh, Head of the Libyan desk at the Swedish Foreign Ministry. This was within the framework of cooperation, especially in the education and healthcare sectors.

The Swedish officials welcomed the Ambassador’s visit, and confirmed their readiness to strengthen joint cooperation. They emphasised that they had a consistent strategy to support North African countries in sustainable development, human rights, environment, and water management.

Libya’s political process has broken down again this year, after the collapse of elections scheduled for December. This prompted the eastern-based Parliament to appoint a new government, led by Fathi Bashagha.

Incumbent Prime Minister, Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba has since refused to quit, and remains entrenched in Tripoli. This has risked a return to fighting, and threatened territorial divisions between rival factions.
