The Interior Minister of the Libyan Parliament-designated government, Major General Issam Abu Zareba discussed the security situation in the eastern region. This was during a meeting with Benghazi’s Security Director, General Ahmed Al-Shamakh. They reviewed the way to introduce new measures to enhance safety and protection.
The meeting also discussed the establishment of an emergency response unit within the directorate, to bolster swift responses to incidents and provide assistance during emergencies.
During the meeting, Abu Zareba also reviewed the operations of Benghazi’s Security Operations Room, and its collaboration with various security directorates within the city’s boundaries.
The meeting aims to achieve effective coordination and information exchange among different security agencies to combat organized crime and terrorism, ultimately ensuring the safety of citizens and their property.
Abu Zareba stressed the need to strengthen cooperation and coordination among various security agencies, to address emerging security challenges effectively. He noted that the ministry would “provide all necessary support to ensure the successful implementation of security plans, with a focus on protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens.”
Notably, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressed deep concern over the ongoing armed clashes in Benghazi.
The Mission cited reports from the eastern region suggesting unverified accounts of civilian casualties and a significant disruption in communication networks
UNSMIL called upon all parties involved in the conflict to uphold their obligations to protect civilians in accordance with international law.
The clashes in Benghazi occurred on 7 October. UNSMIL urged all parties to exercise utmost restraint and take all necessary precautions to prevent harm to non-combatants.
UNSMIL also urged the authorities in eastern Libya to take urgent measures to restore telecommunications services in Benghazi.
