Libyan Crisis Top of Tunisian President’s Agenda During Visit To France

Tunisian President Kais Saied is set to pay an official visit to Paris on Monday, at the invitation of his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron.

In a statement, the President’s media office claimed that the visit to France was a great opportunity to strengthen and develop bilateral relations between the two countries.

It pointed out that Saied will discuss a number of issues of common concern with Macron, especially the situation in Libya.

It added that this was the second official state visit by the President since his election, as he has previously visited Algeria in February.

President Saied’s visit to Paris comes amid a prevailing climate of tension in Tunisia. A number of charges have been directed against Tunisian Parliament Speaker Rashid Ghannouchi for his non-neutral position over the Libyan conflict.

Gannouchi has voiced his support for the Tripoli based Government of National Accord, landing criticism from a number of parties and officials in Tunisia.

Earlier this month, the Tunisian President reaffirmed his country’s neutrality with regard to the crisis in Libya during a phone call with President Macron.
