Khalifa Haftar, Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army, emphasized the importance of completing upgrades and rehabilitation efforts at Derna Hospital, including the installation of advanced medical equipment. The discussion occurred during a meeting with Osama Hammad, Prime Minister of the government appointed by the Parliament.

In a statement from Hammad’s office, it was noted that Haftar, along with Prime Minister Hammad and Health Minister Othman Abduljalil, reviewed the current status of healthcare services and the government’s efforts to address challenges in providing top-tier medical care.

The meeting, which took place on Tuesday, covered the health sector’s latest developments and initiatives to enhance medical services, with a special emphasis on cancer care.

Following the devastating impact of Mediterranean storm Daniel on September 10, which led to significant casualties and destruction in eastern Libyan cities including Derna, Hammad announced the formation of the “Derna and Affected Areas Reconstruction Fund.” This fund is aimed at overseeing the reconstruction efforts in areas ravaged by the storm.

In related news, Japan has committed $1.6 million to support UNICEF’s flood relief activities in eastern Libya. This contribution, announced during a meeting in Tripoli between UNICEF’s representative Michele Servadei and Japanese Ambassador Masaki Amadera, is in addition to a previous $1 million donation from Japan. The funds are intended to improve health, water, sanitation, and child protection services for those impacted by the floods, with a plan to assist 165,000 people, including 75,000 children. This move coincides with the reopening of the Japanese Embassy in Libya, highlighting Japan’s continued commitment to supporting the Libyan people and children affected by the floods.
