In a meeting held on Thursday, Ali Al-Abed, Libya’s Minister of Labour and Rehabilitation for the Government of National Unity, engaged in discussions with Michael Ohnmacht, the German Ambassador to Libya. The primary focus of their dialogue was the prospect of establishing a Libyan-German training center aimed at enhancing vocational training within Libya across various sectors.
The Ministry of Labour released a brief statement noting the discussions encompassed “prospects of cooperation in various vocational training areas.” This includes the potential for collaboration between German vocational training institutions and companies and Libyan training centers to facilitate knowledge transfer.
This engagement builds on earlier discussions in 2023 between Al-Abed and the German Ambassador about strengthening cooperation with German entities active in Libya. The focus was on augmenting training centers, entrepreneurship initiatives, and vocational training in partnership with the German Agency for International Cooperation, under the aegis of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Additionally, Abdoulaye Bathily, the United Nations Special Envoy to Libya, met with Ambassador Ohnmacht to deliberate on Libya’s political landscape and recent developments. Bathily emphasised the importance of all key Libyan factions actively participating in efforts to resolve the country’s extended political stalemate and called for enhanced, coordinated international support for Libya.
This ongoing dialogue underscores the international commitment to assisting Libya as it navigates a complex political terrain marked by divisions since the 2011 revolution that led to the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi. The discussions highlight a concerted effort to stabilize Libya through vocational training enhancements and international cooperation, aiming to support the nation’s recovery from years of conflict and instability.
