The Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Ageela Saleh, is on a European tour to mobilize efforts and gain international support for his political initiative. The initiative has won the approval of Egypt.

Saleh’s initiative is in line with the Cairo Declaration announced by Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi in July.

This was after a tripartite meeting with Saleh and the commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar.

Saleh’s European tour began in Moscow, where he met with a number of Russian officials concerning the violations of the Government of National Accord (GNA) and its armed forces.

Saleh is due to travel to Geneva to meet with Stephanie Williams, the UN’s Acting Special Representative to Libya following Ghassan Salame’s resignation for health reasons.

Following the meeting with Williams, Saleh will travel to Rome, where he will hold meetings with Italian officials, including Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

The meeting with Conte comes with the presence of a common factor, which is their mutual rejection of Turkey’s agreement with the GNA over the demarcation of maritime borders.

The Speaker of the HoR is seeking political support for his initiative, that includes an end to the GNA and the formation of a new Presidential Council and a seperate government.

Informed sources told ‘218 News’, there are proposals that the city of Sirte will be the headquarters of the future government headed by the GNA’s Minister of Interior, Fathi Bashagha.

The new Presidential Council will be based in Benghazi, headed by Saleh.

It is expected that the coming days will bear answers regarding the initiative, amid escalating military tensions.
