Egypt and United States Stress Need To End Illegal Intervention in Libya

On Monday, Egyptian President Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi discussed the latest regional developments and the crisis in Libya in a telephone call with US President Donald Trump, according to Egyptian Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady.

During the talks, El-Sisi reviewed Egypt’s strategic stance towards the Libyan conflict, which aims at restoring the state’s pillars and preserving its national institutions as well as avoiding further deterioration of the security situation.

He added that illegal foreign interventions in Libya added more complications and escalations in the crisis. It is also affecting the entire region’s security and stability.

President Trump expressed his understanding of the concerns related to the negative ramifications of the crisis, praising Egyptian efforts that enhance the political process in Libya, according to Rady.

Turkey has recently transferred thousands of Syrian fighters into Libya to back the Government of National Accord (GNA) in its war against the Libyan National Army (LNA).

In June, President El-Sisi warned that Cairo has a legitimate right to intervene in the war-torn country, describing Sirte and Al-Jufra as a ‘red line’ for Egypt.

He also said any intervention by Egypt would be aimed at protecting Egypt’s western border, achieving a ceasefire, and restoring stability and peace in Libya.
