The International Book Fair kicked off Sunday in Benghazi, officially marking the city’s role as the Islamic Capital of Culture for 2024. The event promises to attract book enthusiasts, students, and professionals alike, showcasing works from over 100 local and Arab publishers and featuring more than 60 writers from cities across Libya.

According to the fair’s organisers, the event is taking place at the Al-Kweifiya Exhibition Grounds, running through 12 November, with support from the National Development Authority and under the supervision of the Benghazi Municipal Council. The organisers have planned a comprehensive lineup of activities aimed at fostering cultural engagement and intellectual exchange among attendees.

The fair offers an extensive selection of books spanning scientific, cultural, legal, and literary fields. In addition to book exhibitions, attendees can look forward to a series of cultural activities, including panel discussions, book signings, and interactive workshops led by notable authors and scholars. These activities are designed to encourage dialogue, promote literacy, and highlight Libya’s literary heritage.

As a highlight of Benghazi’s cultural calendar, the International Book Fair serves as a platform for both established and emerging voices in Libyan and Arab literature. The event also underscores Libya’s commitment to supporting arts, education, and cross-cultural exchange, contributing to the region’s intellectual landscape. The city’s designation as the Islamic Capital of Culture further emphasizes its rich history and cultural significance.

The organisers are expecting a strong turnout, reflecting the local community’s passion for literature and knowledge.
