Algeria Urges Continued Global Support for Libya’s Sovereignty

Algeria has urged the international community to maintain its support for Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The call came during a statement by Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ammar Benjama, at a UN Security Council session discussing Libya.

Benjama emphasised Algeria’s commitment to peace, stability, and reconciliation efforts in Libya. He expressed deep concern over the ongoing crisis, highlighting the international community’s collective responsibility and obligation to assist the Libyan people.

“The devastating toll on Libya’s population and institutions demands immediate attention,” Benjama stated. He outlined Algeria’s position on Libya, grounded in three principles: the sanctity of justice, respect for Libya’s sovereignty, and the necessity of regional stability.

The ambassador stressed the importance of complementarity between the International Criminal Court (ICC) and Libya’s judicial authorities. He insisted the ICC must adhere strictly to the principle of complementarity, ensuring its interventions support rather than replace Libya’s judiciary.

Benjama further urged the international community to provide targeted assistance to bolster Libya’s national judicial capacities. He cautioned that the ICC’s actions should aim to ease tensions, not exacerbate existing divisions in the country.

This statement reinforces Algeria’s long-standing support for a peaceful resolution to Libya’s conflict, advocating for solutions that respect its sovereignty and promote regional stability.
