On Thursday, the United States reiterated its support for comprehensive and credible elections in Libya.

The US Embassy to Libya stated that US Ambassador Richard Norland and Chargé d’Affaires Joshua Harris held a series of meetings this week to confirm their commitment to support credible, comprehensive, and secure elections in Libya.

On 20 July, Harris held a virtual meeting with Dr. Emad Al-Sayeh, Chairman of the Libyan High National Elections Commission (HNEC), to renew US support for the commission.

HNEC is considered an independent and non-political institution, equipped with the appropriate resources and able to fulfill its vital mandate to organize and hold elections.

On 22 July, Ambassador Norland held a virtual meeting with Daniel Rubinstein, Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).

They discussed election programs funded by the US government in Libya with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Harris also held a virtual roundtable meeting with USAID’s partners – the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, the National Democratic Institute and the US Bar Association to discuss a number of programs aimed to raise the technical capacity of HNEC.
