Libya’s Criminal Investigation Department has foiled an attempt to smuggle 34 kilograms of hashish into Benghazi, arresting a suspected drug trafficker and his wife who were allegedly transporting the narcotics from the town of Soloug.

The successful operation followed intelligence received by the department’s Investigation and Evidence Collection Unit, indicating the suspect was involved in drug trafficking between cities with the help of his wife. After verifying the information, the head of the department, Major General Ahmed Al-Shamekh, issued urgent orders to apprehend the suspects.

Security forces intensified their field efforts, tracking the suspects’ movements and identifying the precise timing of the drug transport. Based on this intelligence, a coordinated ambush was set up in the Nawaghia area along the Soloug–Benghazi road.

As the suspects attempted to flee after detecting the checkpoint, they were pursued by the investigation patrols and subsequently apprehended. The hashish was found in their possession during the arrest.

Both individuals were transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters in Benghazi, where investigations are ongoing. Authorities confirmed that the case will be referred to the Public Prosecution along with the seized narcotics for legal proceedings.

This operation underscores Libya’s continued struggle with drug trafficking and the efforts of law enforcement agencies to clamp down on illicit drug networks operating within the country.
