On Monday, the Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh, held a meeting in Cairo with the United States Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, to discuss all possible solutions to the Libyan crisis.

In a statement, the Parliament Speaker’s media advisor, Hamid Al-Safi, said that the talks tackled the actual steps taken for applying Ageela Saleh’s initiative, which culminated in the Cairo Declaration in accordance with the outcomes of the Berlin conference.

Al-Safi stressed that it was agreed to continue the cease-fire and to keep cities of Sirte and Al-Jufrah as demilitarised zones until the resumption of political dialogue and negotiations.

On his part, the US ambassador expressed his country’s consistent position on the need to stop the fighting in Libya, stressing that there is no military solution to the crisis in the country.

Libya has been split since 2014 between two rival administrations: the Libyan National Army (LNA), led by Khalifa Haftar, in the east, and the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) in the west.

The Egyptian initiative was launched on June 6th by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, Khalifa Haftar, and Aguila Saleh. It involves a ceasefire, an elected leadership council and a longer-term peace plan for the country.
