On Friday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced the registration of 401,836 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Libya as a result of the war in the country.

In a statement, UNHCR added that as of 13 August, 6,971 refugees and migrants have been registered as rescued/intercepted at sea by the Libyan Coast Guard and disembarked in Libya. It confirmed that a total of 2,173 persons of concern to the UNHCR disembarked in Libya mainly from Sudan (76%) and Somalia (10%).

“Last week, UNHCR responded to more than 200 calls through its registration, community-based and Benghazi hotlines,” the statement said.

It added that it continues to provide medical assistance to refugees and asylum-seekers in Libya, as a total of 2,495 primary healthcare consultations were provided so far this year, including 135 at the disembarkation points, 806 in detention centres and 1,689 in the urban community.

UNHCR said that it continues to support those who were forced to flee their homes and remain in their own country with cash assistance, core relief items and quick impact projects (QIPs), pointing out that it has assisted a total 35,525 IDPs so far in 2020.
