On Friday, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire declared by Libyan Parliament Speaker, Ageela Saleh, and the Prime Minister of the Government of the National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj.

Borrell wrote on his official Twitter page that there were “important and positive news coming from Libya regarding the ceasefire and the resumption of the political process.”

Borrell added that all Libyan parties must abide by their commitments, stressing that Libyans deserve a political solution and a return to stability and peace.

The GNA, which is based in the west of the country, issued a statement on Friday morning announcing a ceasefire across the country. It also called for the demilitarisation of the contested strategic cities of Sirte and Al-Jufrah, which are controlled by the Libyan National Army.
