Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, stressed his support for the recent agreement between the Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, and the Speaker of Parliament, Ageela Saleh.

During his meeting with Al-Sarraj in Tripoli, Di Maio said: “Italy welcomes the agreement reached with Saleh to strengthen the ceasefire and we support it.” Al-Sarraj and Saleh agreed to a ceasefire, and an end to all military operations on the 21st of August.

“We believe, as we have always said, that all external interference must stop,” Di Maio said. He added that “Libya is an important player for us, and a crucial pivot for building a new development model in the Mediterranean region.” Di Maio also pointed out that this could happen through “flourishing trade exchange and providing growth opportunities to all countries in the region.”

Al-Sarraj, announced the establishment of a committee for economic issues between Italy and Libya, “we want Italian companies to come to us to support progress and development in Libya,” he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Di Maio arrived in the capital, Tripoli, to discuss trade and industry issues with Libyan officials. He is scheduled to meet with GNA’s Foreign Minister Mohamed Siala, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Maiteeq, President of the Libyan Oil Corporation (NOC) Mustafa Sanalla, and Head of the Supreme Council of State Khaled Al-Mishri.
