Libya is holding municipal elections today in nine cities, including Benghazi, as part of ongoing efforts to complete the local elections track and strengthen municipal governance across the country.
Voting is taking place in Tobruk, Qaminis, Sebha, Tokra, Al-Abyar, Suloug, Benghazi, Sirte, and Qasr Al-Jadi, marking another step toward reinforcing local administration and public participation at the municipal level.
The High National Elections Commission confirmed that all technical, administrative, and logistical preparations were finalized ahead of polling day.
This included equipping polling stations, distributing ballot papers and election materials, and deploying trained staff to manage voting procedures.
The commission called on eligible voters to participate actively, stressing that municipal councils play a vital role in managing services, development projects, and local affairs.
The commission reiterated its commitment to applying all legal and regulatory standards governing the electoral process. It also emphasized that extensive coordination is in place with security authorities to ensure that voting proceeds in a safe, orderly, and transparent environment.
Security forces have been deployed around polling centers to protect voters, election staff, and materials, while maintaining smooth access to voting locations.
In Tobruk, voting is being conducted across 50 polling centers, with approximately 20,800 voters having already collected their voter cards. The electoral process there is overseen by the local elections office in coordination with the Tobruk Security Directorate.
In Sirte, 35 polling centers have been opened, with election officials working closely with security personnel to ensure efficient distribution of materials and uninterrupted voting.
Similar arrangements have been implemented in Benghazi and the remaining municipalities, where local election offices confirmed readiness to handle voter turnout throughout the day.
Earlier this month, the High National Elections Commission announced that 100,218 voter cards had been distributed to registered voters in the municipalities included in this phase of the elections, aiming to encourage broader participation.
