A Libyan defendant accused in the Lockerbie bombing case has argued that his right to a fair trial has been compromised due to the disappearance of a crucial video recording allegedly showing his confession.
The defense team for Abu Agila Masoud al‑Merrimi told the court that the missing footage is central to the prosecution’s case and its absence prevents independent verification of how the alleged confession was obtained. They say the loss of the recording raises serious doubts about the reliability of written statements attributed to the defendant.
Al-Merrimi has consistently denied any involvement in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, which exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing 270 people. His case was revived decades later following his transfer into U.S. custody, reopening one of the most sensitive terrorism trials in modern history.
According to the defense, the interrogation video was originally kept by Libyan authorities but later went missing before it could be reviewed by independent investigators. Without the footage, lawyers argue, it is impossible to assess whether the alleged confession was made voluntarily or under coercive conditions.
The defense also cited the passage of time as a major obstacle, noting that key witnesses have died and physical evidence has deteriorated, further weakening the ability to mount a full defense. They contend that these factors, combined with the missing video, violate basic legal standards required for a fair and transparent trial.
The court is expected to review the defense motion and determine whether the absence of the video recording affects the admissibility of evidence or the continuation of proceedings in the case.
