HCS Member Praises Egypt’s Fundamental Role in Solving Libyan Crisis

The member of the High Council of State (HCS), Belkacem Qzeit, said on Saturday that Egypt had a fundamental role in reaching a solution to the Libyan crisis, explaining that President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi greatly contributed to the positive and rapid developments that occurred during the past two months.

In an interview with the “Youm 7” Egyptian newspaper, Qzeit called on Egypt to intensify communication with the leaders of the western region in Libya, stressing that the Libyan delegation urged Egypt to intervene to support the ceasefire in Libya.

He explained that the Libyan delegation intends to meet with a number of Egyptian officials to outline a roadmap consistent with UNSMIL’s efforts, by giving more relative weight to some data and amending some proposals.

There are two separate Libyan delegations that are currently in Cairo to discuss a deadlock between rival factions in the conflict-hit country. The first, comprised of members of the High State Council, left Misrata Airport for Cairo. The second one includes four MPs and the national security advisor to the head of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj.

Qzeit also praised the Libyan military meetings hosted by Cairo in recent years, indicating that Libya needs a national military institution that represents the Libyan people as a whole.

He also identified the unification of the country’s civil, sovereign and executive institutions as a necessary step for unifying the military institution.

Qzeit stressed the importance of maintaining the Libyan Parliament’s cohesion and forming a new Presidential Council that represents all of Libya’s regions, since the current Government of National Accord’s (GNA) Presidential Council does not represent Libya.

He also emphasized the rejection by the Libyan people of the deployment of foreign mercenaries and militias in their country.
