Egypt has reaffirmed its continued support for stability in Libya, urging the country’s political actors to move quickly towards holding presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible to end the ongoing state of division.
Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Tamim Khallaf said Cairo is maintaining intensive diplomatic contacts at all levels to help reach common understandings that support Libya’s unity, territorial integrity, and national cohesion.
Speaking in a phone interview with Al Hadath Al Youm TV channel, Khallaf said Egypt firmly rejects any foreign interference in Libya’s internal affairs. He added that Cairo’s efforts are focused on supporting a Libyan-led path that preserves the unity of the country and helps restore stability.
Khallaf said Libya is of major importance to Egypt and represents a vital strategic depth for Egyptian national security. He noted that all Egyptian state institutions are closely following developments in Libya because of their impact on regional security and Egypt’s western border.
He added that the current crisis in Libya requires continued coordination with all active Libyan parties in order to bring viewpoints closer and support efforts aimed at ending political division.
Egypt has repeatedly called for a comprehensive political settlement in Libya through dialogue, national consensus, and elections that allow Libyans to choose their leadership and rebuild unified state institutions.
