GNA Threatens to Withdraw from Ceasefire Agreement

On Monday, the Defence Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Salah Al-Din Al-Namroush, threatened to withdraw from the ceasefire agreement signed on 23 October with the Libyan National Army (LNA), under the auspices of the United Nations.

“We warn the UN and the countries supporting peace and dialogue in Libya that we will withdraw from the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) and also withdraw from the ceasefire if the LNA forces undertake any military action,” Al-Namroush said in a statement.

He denounced the military actions undertaken yesterday by the LNA that cost the GNA the Al-Maghawir military camp. The camp was held by GNA-aligned militias in the southern region of Ubari and was headed by Ali Kana, who is the commander of GNA forces in southwestern Libya.

The LNA forces gave the camp’s militias an opportunity to surrender after clashes erupted between the two sides. The Al-Maghawir military camp is of strategic importance to the GNA, as it can be used as an outpost to wage attacks on the oil fields of southern Libya.
