EU-US to Discuss Arms Embargo on Turkey

On Friday, the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, said EU leaders plan to discuss imposing an arms embargo on Turkey with NATO allies and the United States in March.

The EU’s 27 leaders held a summit on Friday, and agreed to impose sanctions on Turkish individuals and entities over Ankara’s energy exploration dispute with Greece and Cyprus. However, they decided to postpone discussions on any harsher steps until the new year.

“We spoke about how questions about arms exports must be discussed within NATO. We said that we want to coordinate with the new US administration over Turkey,” Merkel told a news conference.

EU states have criticized Turkey’s involvement in the Libyan conflict. They have also denounced Turkish provocations in the eastern Mediterranean.
