On Saturday, the Legal Committee of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) resumed its meetings after they presented their proposals regarding the constitutional basis for national elections scheduled on 24 December 2021.

The Committee members agreed to hold extensive sessions to reach a consensus on the submitted proposals. The legal committee is comprised of 18 LPDF members and is mandated to follow-up on the discussions of the constitutional committee established by the Libyan Parliament and the High Council of State (HCS).

The United Nations Support Mission to Libya (UNSMIL) commended the committee’s constructive discussions and stressed the importance of moving towards agreeing on specific proposals to be presented to the LPDF.

The spokesman for UNSMIL, John Allam, on Friday said that the national elections in Libya are “a top priority.”

Allam indicated that 70% of the roadmap has been completed, but so far, the LPDF has not been able to make progress on the unified executive authority selection mechanism.
