On Friday, the Head of Libya’s Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Mnifi, pledged to work on unifying the army as well as facilitating reconciliation efforts between Libyan factions.

During a tour in Tobruk city, Al-Mnifi said the main goals of the newly appointed Presidential Council are to, unify the military institution, continue discussions with the 5 + 5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) and further the efforts of the United Nations (UN) mission.

He stressed that the new Presidential Council will unify all Libyan state institutions, which will reflect positively on the standard of living of Libyan citizens.

This visit comes a days after Al-Mnifi visited Benghazi, where he held a meeting with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar of the Libyan National Army (LNA).

Haftar expressed his support for the new Presidential Council and the outcome of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) vote in Geneva. This is set to bring the country closer to the next stage in its democratic process and national elections to be held in December 2021. The LNA Commander confirmed that his forces will work to preserve democracy and the peaceful transfer of power.
