France Vows to Help Enable Libyan Elections

The French Ambassador to Libya, Mostafa Maharaj, said that his country will play a positive role in stabilizing Libya in order to reach a political agreement in the North-African nation. The agreement aims to pave the way for holding elections according to a constitutional basis, the results of which are approved by all political parties.

This came during his meeting with the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Mnifi, according to the Presidential Council’s media office. The statement added that the French diplomat praised the role played by the Presidential Council to get Libya out of the current crisis.

The meeting discussed the developments in the political situation in Libya and the local and international efforts made by France in achieving political stability in Libya.

“These efforts aim to (holding) parliamentary and presidential elections that meet the desire of the Libyan people to choose who represents them and implements their demands were also discussed,” the statement concluded.

Notably, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Libyan Parliament, Youssef Al-Agouri, encouraged Mihraje to open a consulate in Benghazi, eastern Libya. During a meeting held at the Libyan House of Representatives (HoR), in Benghazi, they discussed bilateral cooperation, joint coordination and recent political developments.

According to the Parliament’s media office, Al-Agouri stressed the depth of relations with France and the need to enhance joint coordination to face common challenges. He affirmed the need to cooperate in combating terrorism and the migration crisis, and strengthening cooperation in the scientific and economic fields.

For his part, the Libyan lawmaker expressed his thanks for the efforts of France to support the stability of Libya.

In turn, Maharaj renewed his thanks to Al-Agouri for the efforts he made to resume teaching the French language at Libyan schools.

Maharaj also met with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), at the headquarters of the LNA General Command in Al-Rajma town in Benghazi.

The meeting, which dealt with the situation in Libya and developments in the country, was also attended by the military attaché at the French Embassy in Libya, according to a statement by the General Command.
