On Saturday, Libyan Chief of General Staff Mohamed Al-Haddad held talks with Tunisia’s Defense Minister Khaled Shili to discuss enhancing security cooperation between the two countries, aiming to transform their security coordination into a strategic partnership.
The meeting, attended by high-ranking military officials from both countries, focused on border security, counterterrorism, and combating organized crime, highlighting the shared threats both nations face.
Libya emphasized the importance of strengthening military coordination with Tunisia, particularly in intelligence sharing, border control, and counterterrorism strategies.
For his part, Al-Haddad reaffirmed Libya’s commitment to expanding military ties, enhancing joint security operations, and increasing military training programs. He highlighted the need for greater regional collaboration to tackle terrorist threats, human trafficking, and smuggling networks.
Tunisia reiterated its support for Libya’s security efforts, emphasizing the necessity of stronger defense coordination to ensure regional stability. Shili called for increased military exchanges and joint efforts in monitoring security threats, securing the shared border, and preventing illegal activities.
Libya and Tunisia have a history of military collaboration, conducting joint exercises, including “African Lion” and the naval drill “Phoenix Express”. These engagements reflect ongoing efforts to strengthen military readiness and develop coordinated defense strategies.
Recent high-level meetings have reinforced these commitments. In January, Al-Haddad welcomed Tunisia’s Defense Attaché in Tripoli for discussions on military cooperation.
In December, Libya’s Military Intelligence Director, Mahmoud Hamza, met with Tunisian defense and intelligence officials to address counterterrorism efforts, cross-border security, and emerging threats in North Africa.
Libya continues to face security challenges, including militia activity, foreign mercenary presence, and weak central authority over its armed forces. Strengthening defense ties with Tunisia is a critical step in Libya’s efforts to rebuild its security institutions and enhance national defense capabilities.
As Libya works toward stabilizing its military and securing its borders, partnerships with neighboring countries like Tunisia remain essential. By expanding joint operations, intelligence sharing, and defense coordination, Libya aims to strengthen regional security and prevent external threats from destabilizing the country.
