The High National Election Commission (HNEC) in Libya has announced an extension to the voter registration deadline for the second phase of the municipal elections, now set to close on 13 April. The original deadline was Sunday, but the extension aims to allow more voters to register.
In an official statement, the HNEC referred to the minutes from its eighth meeting of 2025, held on 5 April, which confirmed the decision to extend registration for voters who will participate in the selection of 52 municipal councils. This decision follows the commission’s standard procedures and mechanisms for electoral registration.
Voter registration resumed on Sunday, 5 April, after a suspension for the Eid al-Fitr holiday. The registration centres are open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. Despite the break in in-person registration, citizens were still able to register through SMS during the holiday period.
As of last Tuesday, around 461,202 Libyan citizens had registered to vote in the second phase of the municipal elections. This number represents a significant participation rate as the country moves towards more localised governance.
