Nationwide Strike Shakes Libya’s Justice System Over Unpaid Wage Law

The General Union of Justice Ministry and Judicial Bodies Employees has announced a nationwide strike, sit-in, and suspension of work across all courts and judicial institutions, starting Sunday, February 22. The move aims to pressure the Government of National Unity to implement the approved salary increase law for administrative staff within the justice sector.

In a statement, the union said the escalation comes after what it described as continued failure by the government to enforce legislation granting pay raises to employees of the Ministry of Justice and affiliated judicial bodies.

The union stressed the importance of distinguishing between members of the judicial authorities — including judges, court presidents, and prosecutors — whose salary adjustments have already been implemented, and the remaining administrative employees who are still awaiting execution of the law passed by the Libyan House of Representatives.

Union officials warned that the ongoing delay has fueled frustration among workers and disrupted the functioning of courts nationwide. They said the strike will remain in effect until the government takes concrete steps to implement the salary increase.

The development adds pressure to Libya’s already strained judicial system, raising concerns about potential delays in court proceedings and broader impacts on the justice sector.
