Major General Ahmed Al-Mesmari, spokesman for the Libyan National Army (LNA), said the newly appointed Presidential Council became the Supreme Commander of the Libyan Army, and that the army is an institution of the Libyan state.

“According to the political agreement, the new Presidential Council is the Supreme Commander of the Libyan Army,” Al-Mesmari said in a television interview with Al-Arabiya.

He stressed that the most important files facing the army are the exit of mercenaries and foreign forces, as well as resolving the crisis of the armed militias.

He pointed out that the tasks that will be assigned to officers of the General Command and the Western Region include laying down operational plans to implement the agreement, exchanging detainees, and clearing mines.

He noted that the international community should support the tasks of removing foreign mercenaries from Libya, including Turkish military forces.

“If the other side does not assume its responsibilities, the Libyan army will move forward,” Al-Mesmari warned.
