Greece-Italy Discuss Developments in Libya

On Monday, Greek Foreign Minister, Nikos Dendias met with the Italian Ambassador to Athens, Patricia Falcinelli to discuss the latest developments in Libya.

“We discussed bilateral and regional issues with an emphasis on the developments in Libya,” the Greek FM tweeted.

Dendias had previously stated that Greece would support Libya’s elections scheduled for 24 December, and will do everything it can to help remove all mercenaries and foreign troops from the North-African nation.

During his meeting with the Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh in Athens, earlier this month, Dendias called for the withdrawal of all foreign troops and mercenaries from Libya, in order to “facilitate holding general elections in the country.”

“What is needed is to allow the Libyan people to express their sovereign will in the elections. For that to happen, all foreign troops and mercenaries must leave Libya. Greece will do everything it can to assist in this direction,” Dendias told Saleh during their meeting.

The FM appreciated Saleh’s position, “which paves the way for the holding of fair and free elections in Libya.” Dendias also hailed Saleh’s “firm stance in favour of the withdrawal of all foreign troops and mercenaries from Libya.”
