Over 2.6 Million Registered Citizens Eligible to Vote at Libya’s Elections

On Sunday, Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC) reported that the number of voters registered in the commission’s records reached 2,689,094. It pointed out that the number of new registered voters on July 31st increased to 348,998 voters.

Libya’s HNEC previously said that the registration rate exceeded 50% of the total number of Libyan citizens who are eligible to vote.

On Saturday, the HNEC also denied the existence of a defect in the voter registration system, explaining that there is huge pressure on the commission’s call centre as a result of the calls it receives from thousands of citizens, amounting to 12,000 calls per day.

It is noteworthy that the Libyan election is supposed to be held at the end of 2021. This was agreed upon by Libyan parties to the conflict in a United Nations-brokered deal last October.
