Ramtane Lamamara, the former Foreign Minister of Algeria, withdrew his initial agreement to be the Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

“The Secretary-General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, personally proposed to me the position of Special Representative [to Libya] and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya on the 7th of March. I gave him my initial approval as a matter of my commitment to the brotherly Libyan people, and the international and regional bodies concerned with finding a solution to the Libyan crisis,” said Lamamra.

He added that “It seems that the consultations that Mr. Guterres has been carrying out do not have the consensus of the Security Council and other representatives, which are necessary for the success of the peace and national reconciliation mission in Libya.”

“I intend to contact the UN Secretary General in the coming hours to thank him again for the opportunity, and inform him of the withdrawal of my initial approval of his proposal”, adding “I will take this opportunity to express to Mr. Guterres my hope for the success of the peace path that the international community must promote and achieve in Libya.”
