On Monday, the Prime Minister of Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, held talks with Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abella in Valletta.

The two discussed recent developments in Libya and a number of joint cooperation issues.

Prime Minister Abella confirmed his support for the United Nations-led efforts that aim to engage Libya’s warring parties in political dialogue, away from any foreign intervention.

This would be to preserve Libya’s independence, unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

He also highlighted the relationship between the two countries, voicing his desire for closer cooperation with Libya.

Al-Sarraj confirmed that his visit comes within the framework of continuous consultation and coordination between the two states on issues of common concern and to complete the talks held between them in Tripoli at the end of May.

He also expressed his gratitude to the Maltese government over its support for the GNA’s role in maintaining security and stability in Libya.

The two discussed the executive steps required for activating cooperation programs in the political, economic, and security fields, as well as opportunities for joint investment.

The talks also touched upon the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries to combat illegal migration.

During the visit, the two leaders inaugurated a joint coordination center for combating illegal migration in the Maltese capital.

They then visited the Grand Master Palace in Valletta, where Al-Sarraj met President George Vella of Malta and discussed the latest developments in Libya.

Al-Sarraj arrived in Malta on Monday with Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha and Foreign Minister Mohammed Siala.
