A Libyan coalition known as the “Coordination of National Parties and Blocs” expressed strong condemnation and growing concern over the recurring incidents of violence against citizens in various Libyan cities.

In a statement, the coalition warned local, regional, and international parties, including the UN Support Mission in Libya, about the potential severe consequences of the current deteriorating situation, widespread frustration, and lack of a genuine solution to the Libyan crisis.

The statement came after intense military mobilisations in the city of Zawiya, where main roads were blocked with barricades. While the reasons for these movements and the parties involved remain unclear, there are increasing calls to combat those inciting unrest in the city.

On Saturday, the coalition held the authorities accountable for the protection of civilian lives, property, and safety, urging immediate actions to halt the violence. The statement called for an immediate end to killings, physical violence, enforced disappearances, kidnappings, and the incitement by some religious institutions against Libya’s sectarian diversity.

It also condemned the suppression of journalists, media personnel, and civil activists, labelling these acts as criminal and unlawful. The coalition demanded that judicial and security authorities publicly release the results of their investigations.

Additionally, the coalition advocated for replacing the current power-sharing approach among entrenched bodies with a focus on state-building. It called for serious and responsible political dialogue among Libyan parties and cooperative efforts among all Libyan components.

On social media, videos surfaced showing barricades on main roads in Zawiya. A statement from those identifying as the “Tribes of Zawiya” rejected what they described as attempts by hidden and hired factions to sow discord among the city’s social components, destabilise security, and pursue destructive agendas. They emphasised that Zawiya remains united in all its components.
