Libyan Parliament Speaker Urges End to Transitional Phase

Libyan House of Representatives Speaker Ageela Saleh has reaffirmed the importance of a Libyan-led approach to resolving the country’s long-running political crisis, stating that foreign and UN roles should be limited to support and advice.

In a televised speech during the national reconciliation forum held in Abu Surra, Zawiya, Saleh said Parliament remains committed to ending the transitional phase and guiding Libya towards a permanent constitutional framework. “We have proven ourselves to be the most sincere in adopting and working towards building a civilised state – a state of justice, constitution, and equality – despite the difficult conditions,” he said.

Saleh noted that the Libyan Parliament has faced serious challenges since its election, including repeated attempts to dissolve it and create a legislative vacuum. Such efforts, he warned, would only push Libya further into chaos and armed conflict, instead of enabling the country to hold fair presidential and parliamentary elections.

He emphasised that these elections are essential for allowing the Libyan people to freely choose their leaders. “The House of Representatives drafted the electoral laws and shared them with the High Council of State, which then proposed forming a 6+6 joint committee to finalise the necessary amendments.”

According to Saleh, the House of Representatives approved these amendments without objection, fulfilling its legislative responsibilities. He added that it is now the role of the High National Election Commission to set a date and organise the elections.

Saleh’s remarks come amid renewed national efforts to resolve political divisions and establish a clear path toward democratic governance in Libya.
