On Sunday, Libya’s High National Elections Commission announced a 48-hour extension for voter registration in the second phase of the municipal council elections. The extension, which comes in response to numerous public requests, will only apply to SMS-based registration.

Originally scheduled to close on Sunday, the registration period was extended after a wave of citizen appeals reached the Commission, asking for more time to complete the process.

In an official statement, the Commission said: “In response to repeated requests from citizens and the large number of calls received asking for additional time to register, the Commission announces a final 48-hour extension for voter registration, limited strictly to registration via text message.”

While in-person registration offices will close as planned at 5:00 PM on Sunday, the Commission emphasized that this SMS-based extension will be the last opportunity for eligible voters to enroll. There will be no further extensions once this additional window closes.

To register via SMS, citizens must send a message with their National ID number and their polling center code to 17017.

The Elections Commission urged all eligible voters who have not yet registered to take advantage of this final opportunity and ensure their participation in the upcoming municipal elections. These elections are a key step in enhancing local governance and democratic participation across the country.
