Libyan authorities have recovered the bodies of at least 15 irregular migrants along the country’s western coast, between the cities of Zuwara and Mellitah, following extensive search operations carried out last week.

According to local officials, the remains included three bodies discovered in Mellitah and twelve others found near Zuwara. All victims are believed to be migrants who died attempting to cross the Mediterranean toward Europe.

The bodies were transferred to a forensic facility for examination and documentation before being buried at Abu Kammash cemetery, which is equipped with numbered graves corresponding to forensic records. The burial took place under the supervision of local authorities and forensic teams to ensure proper identification and respect for human dignity.

In related operations, rescue teams retrieved eight additional bodies last week and 26 the week before from coastal areas including Zuwara, Abu Kammash, and Mellitah. Five other remains were transferred from Tripoli to Zuwara for burial, while seven identified bodies were moved from Zuwara to Tripoli for handover to their families.

These recovery efforts form part of Libya’s ongoing humanitarian operations aimed at locating, documenting, and burying the remains of migrants who perish during perilous sea crossings, ensuring their rights and dignity are preserved.
