On Tuesday, the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Peter Stano, said that the EU appreciated the role of Morocco in helping to settle the Libyan conflict.

“We are grateful to Morocco for its active role with both parties in support of the UN-led process,” Stano stated. He added that the EU welcomes any initiative aimed at supporting the mediation process and advancing the resolution of the conflict through political means. Stano also noted that the EU will continue to actively support the Libyan people, in their aspirations to establish a peaceful, stable and prosperous country.

The ongoing dialogue between the delegations of the Tripoli-based High Council of State and the eastern-based Parliament began on Sunday in Bouznika. The dialogue aims at maintaining the ceasefire, and opening negotiations to end the crisis between the warring parties.

This meeting takes place a few weeks after a visit to Morocco by the President of the High Council of State, Khaled Al-Mishri, and the Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Salah, following an invitation by the Speaker of the Moroccan Parliament.

The dialogue also follows a visit to Morocco, by the Acting Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Williams. This is part of her consultations conducted with Libyan, regional, and international partners, in order to find a solution to the crisis.
