Libya Expresses Solidarity with Sudan over Floods

The Libyan Foreign Affairs Committee, part of the eastern-based Parliament, expressed its full solidarity with the government and people of Sudan. The country faces heavy and destructive floods, which have swept through many states, killing several citizens and destroying homes.

In a statement, the committee stressed its full readiness to coordinate with Sudan for the necessary humanitarian relief efforts. Notably, the Sudanese Security and Defence Council has declared a state of emergency throughout the country for three months. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) sent humanitarian aid for those affected by the floods in Khartoum.

According to Reuters, flooding regularly happens in Sudan during the summer. However, this year’s unprecedented water levels have left larger tracts of farmland submerged. Excess water has also been spilling over into major roads in Khartoum, for the first time in living memory.
