Jean-Claude Gakosso, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Congo, said that Turkey aided Libya, at the invitation of its legitimate government. He claimed that Turkey’s presence there created a balance, and an opportunity for dialogue and negotiations between the warring parties.

Gakosso’s remarks came during a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, in Ankara, according to the Turkish news agency, Anadolu. The Congolese FM stressed the need to achieve an understanding, even at a minimum, between the parties to achieve national peace in Libya. Gakosso pointed out that the African Union is a party to the Libyan issue, as it aims for peace in the country. The Congolese FM emphasized the need to disarm Libya’s militias, to ensure peace and avoid a recurrence of clashes.

Ankara continues to escalate its involvement in the Libyan conflict by supporting the Government of National Accord (GNA), despite Turkey participating in, and agreeing to the results of the Berlin Conference in January. Foreign states active in Libya, agreed to uphold the UN arms embargo.
