The coastal city of Sirte is preparing to host part of the Flintlock 2026 military exercises, organised by special operations forces under the supervision of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), in a move seen as a step toward enhancing coordination between Libya’s divided security institutions.
Authorities confirmed that units affiliated with the Government of National Unity, led by Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba, have been deployed to Sirte to take part in the upcoming drills. The exercises are expected to include forces from both eastern and western Libya, marking a rare instance of joint military engagement.
Flintlock is an annual multinational exercise led by AFRICOM since 2005, aimed at strengthening counterterrorism capabilities, improving border security, and enhancing interoperability among participating forces. It is widely regarded as the largest special operations training event on the African continent, bringing together African nations, the United States, and international partners.
The inclusion of Libyan forces from rival regions highlights ongoing efforts to bridge longstanding divisions within the country’s military structure. In previous remarks, AFRICOM Deputy Commander John Brennan stressed the importance of unifying Libya’s security institutions, noting that sustainable stability and economic progress depend on genuine coordination between eastern and western forces.
Brennan also pointed to Libya’s significant economic potential and opportunities for security sector reform, while warning that progress remains tied to overcoming institutional fragmentation.
Officials involved in the exercise say Flintlock 2026 goes beyond traditional military training. It is also designed to build operational capacity, strengthen partnerships, and support Libya’s sovereignty by encouraging cooperation among its security actors.
The drills in Sirte are expected to send a broader signal about the potential for military coordination in a country still grappling with political and institutional divisions, while reinforcing international support for stabilisation efforts.
