The International Criminal Court (ICC) has stated that it cannot officially confirm reports circulating about the alleged death of Saif Sneidel, emphasizing that verification procedures are still ongoing and that no formal conclusion has been reached.
In a brief statement, the court said it is closely monitoring the situation and reviewing all available information before determining the legal status of the case.
The ICC stressed that any decision regarding ongoing judicial proceedings can only be made after a death has been officially verified through recognized forensic, legal, and judicial channels.
The court clarified that reports, rumors, or unofficial claims are not sufficient grounds for ending legal proceedings. Under ICC procedures, only judges from the Pre-Trial Chamber have the authority to terminate or suspend a case after receiving confirmed evidence of a suspect’s death.
The statement follows widespread reports regarding Senidel’s alleged death, which have sparked questions about the future of the legal case and whether existing arrest warrants and judicial measures could be affected.
Sneidel remains one of the individuals sought by the ICC under an arrest warrant originally issued under seal in 2020 and publicly disclosed in August 2025.
Prosecutors accuse him of involvement in alleged war crimes and crimes committed in and around Benghazi between 2016 and 2017.
According to court records, the allegations include murder, torture, cruel treatment, and violations of human dignity. Prosecutors have also linked him to several alleged executions that reportedly resulted in the deaths of 23 civilians.
His name has appeared in investigations connected to armed groups operating in eastern Libya during the conflict period.
The case forms part of the ICC’s broader investigation into alleged crimes committed during Libya’s years of conflict.
The court continues to pursue accountability efforts related to serious violations of international law and has repeatedly called for cooperation in executing arrest warrants and supporting judicial processes.
Despite recent legal progress, ICC officials have acknowledged that the implementation of arrest warrants remains dependent on cooperation from national authorities.
Political divisions, security challenges, and limited access to suspects continue to complicate efforts to advance several Libya-related cases before the court.
