The Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Stephanie Williams stated that the permanent ceasefire agreement for all parts of Libya will be ratified by the UN Security Council (UNSC).

“The ceasefire agreement will be ratified by the Security Council and there will be international observers,” Williams said.

She indicated that there would be sanctions against those obstructing the Security Council ceasefire agreement.

On Friday, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya announced that the talks of the Libyan Joint Military Committee 5 + 5 in Geneva resulted in a historic achievement as the Libyan parties reached a permanent ceasefire agreement throughout Libya.

UNSMIL stated that this achievement marked an important turning point towards achieving peace and stability in Libya.

The signing ceremony was held at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva. It was attended by the Acting Special Representative for the Secretary General and a number of representatives of the diplomatic corps of the member states.

In her speech after signing the agreement, Williams praised the patriotism of the two parties to the conflict and their commitment to Libya’s unity and sovereignty.
