The Tunisian Defence Ministry announced that three marine units have rescued 31 illegal migrants, who departed from Libya on Monday evening.

In a statement, the Tunisian MoD explained that they managed to rescue the immigrants, which included two women, after their boat began sinking north of Ras Jedir.

The immigrants revealed that they sailed from the Libyan coast towards Europe. “They were taken to the port of Zarzis, where the National Guard units received them in order to complete the legal procedures,” the statement said.

Libya has emerged as a major transit point for migrants fleeing violence and poverty to reach Europe.
