GNA Arrests 118 Illegal Immigrants in Western Libya

The Interior Ministry of the Government of National Accord (GNA) said the police arrested 118 illegal immigrants on their way to Europe.

The 118 African migrants have been sent to detention centres to take legal measures against them.

“The Special forces raided the place and seized the entire group of 118 illegal immigrants, of several African nationalities, in the city of Al-Alous,” the GNA police said on its official Facebook page.

“The measures were taken against them and handed over to the competent authorities,” it added.

Noteworthy, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reported that more than 10,000 immigrants have been intercepted in 2020.

Since the fall of the Gaddafi regime in 2011, Libya has been plagued by a state of insecurity and chaos that encourages thousands of illegal migrants to attempt to cross the Mediterranean sea towards Europe.

African and Libyan immigrants usually come from Libya’s western regions -controlled by the GNA- and flee violence and poverty to reach Europe.
