On Thursday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) revealed that the death toll of Syrian mercenaries in Azerbaijan exceeded the number of those killed in Libya. The death toll of Turkish-backed fighters in Azerbaijan has reached 541, while the death toll in Libya is estimated at 468 fighters.
In a statement, the SOHR added that it had obtained new details from several mercenaries who recently returned from Nagorno-Karabakh to Syria. They announced that they were receiving variable payments, as some were given 600 Turkish Lira (TL) and 3,500 USD while another group was given 1,000 USD and 1,000 TL each. They added that some others were given two payments of an estimated 5,000 TL. All fighters confirmed that there are “unpaid sums of money” that are supposed to be given to them in the next few days.
The Observatory also pointed out that the bodies of 340 fighters had been returned to Syria. Nearly 825 fighters remain in Azerbaijan out of the 2,580 fighters who had been transported there by the Turkish government. However, it is not known if they will return to Syria or will remain in Azerbaijan.
It is worth noting that the Azerbaijani government has refused to allow these mercenaries to be settled in Nagorno-Karabakh, or other areas of Azerbaijan.
