Nigerian President: Terrorist Groups in Libya Threaten Africa

On Monday, the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari stated that terrorist groups operating in Libya posed a security challenge to other African countries.

Buhari added that terrorism has now become like a “contagion of evil” that can spread at any time if unified measures are not taken against it.

He explained that the instability in Libya ongoing since February 2011 has affected the security of African countries such as Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, and others.

The president stressed the need for the African Union to defeat what he described as the “villains who target innocent people.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that Turkey has transferred more than 18,000 mercenaries from Syria to western Libya, including former fighters of the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda. It estimates that about 8,000 fighters remain in the country.
